Is one of the most picturesque places of the city.During a long time there was only a meadow with flowers, that is why the square is called like this and the zone was controlled by the Orsini till the XII century.
The palace of Pio Righetti was standed against the Torre Arpacata.The field was cobbled in 1440 by Eugenio I and became immediatly a famous square, because it was the passage necessary for the pilgrims and the papal procesion. A lot of executions took place here, and in 1600 Giordano Bruno was accused to be a heretic besides to his memory and symbolised the right of security.The colourful market of Navona plaza had been transfered here in 1869.
