This is one og the most antique churches, and probably the first dedicated to the Blessed Visgin. It is erected on the homonymous plaza, where according to the tradition the fountain is the most antique of Roma.Santa Maria in Trastevere was built according to the wish of the Pope Calisto I in the III century AD, but the edifice owes its actual structure to the Pope Innocenzio II, who totally, rebuilt it with the materials that came from the thermals bath of Caracalla in the XII century.At the beginning of hte XVIII century, the facade decorated with Mosaics of the medieval era was modified by Carlo Fonrana, who also creates the gate. The roman hell towel; which characterized this church as all the other hell towers of this zone, Is from the XVII century, as the little "edicoletta marina".The interior has a basilica structure and is composed of three naves based on ancient columns of granite. In the choir you could admire the famous mosaics, whose the church owes its fame in the little niche at the bottom of the right nave there are some chains which according to the tradition were used for the tortures of the martyreds. |
