The most famous square of Baroque Rome was ordered by Pope Innocenzo X Pamphili to glorify his family.That is why the Pamphilis dominated for a long time, making it the place for a varlety of popular games.The most famous of them was the LakeGame, which took place till the end of the 19th century on each weekend of August, when the concave part of the square was artificially submarged.The square is situated upon the ancient Stadium of Domitiano whose exact shape it has breserved up to the present day.Some arches can still be seen under the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone.The name of the square comes from the expresion "In agone", referring to the fact that the square was built upon the area where in agones, the athletic competitions in 1st century's Rome, used to take place.In the past there was also a market here, which was later transferred to Campo de'Fiore.Today the square fills with a variety of stalls during the feast of the Befana (Epiphany).
